Ivy Getty – It girl on the rise

“My style is a mix of my dad’s rock-star style and classicism from my grandmother” – says Ivy Getty, jet-setting scion, artist, model, socialite and oil heiress.

Ivy launched her modeling career with Ford Models.

After attending Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Ivy Getty moved to New York and modelled for the young designers.

Imagine her sitting barefoot on a silk velvet sofa in her family home overlooking San Francisco Bay or in the penthouse in Lower Manhattan.

Young lady has grown up among paintings by Utrillo, Degas, Renoir, Monet, Cezanne and Matisse.

Her turquoise eyes were impressed by Getty’s family collections of fragile Chinese porcelain and rare English and French antiquites.

“I collect vintage fashions, and especially love YSL by Yves Saint Laurent himself, and I love to wear vintage Pucci, and Galliano for Dior.”

What is the formula of Ivy Getty’s good taste?

Her great-grandfather is oil tycoon Jean Paul Getty who created a multi – billion -dollar fortune with oil in the Middle East.

This family fortune is estimated at 6  billion dollars. Once “baron of oil” become one of the richest private citizen in the 1966 Guinness Book of Records.

They owned 80 percent of the world’s oil empire.

“The conformist is not born. He is made. I believe the brainwashing process begins in the schools and college”- said the patriarch of the Getty family.

Ivy grew up close to her grandmother Ann Getty.

She entered in the world of one of the wealthiest families on the planet and become part of the most popular social circles.

As a California farm girl she transformed herself into the global publisher, philanthropist for political, scientific, author and interior designer.

Ann’s name could be seen on the boards of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library and New York University.

Under her publishing house Mrs. Getty published avant-garde authors like Jean Genet, Bertolt Brecht, Samuel Beckett, and Eugene Ionesco.

Also successfully risked with books as “Lady Chatterley’s Lover,” by D.H. Lawrence, and “Tropic of Cancer,” by Henry Miller.

She is the one who organized fundraising events for Kamala Harris and Barack Obama.

“I have to laugh when I’m described as a socialite. I’m so involved in my work.

Nowadays, I go out once a month — barely — to maintain my socialite status’ – said Ann, who died in 2020.

“Ivy has inherited so many wonderful qualities from Ann, like her love of family, and her fashion style

Education was very important to Ann, so each year she planned educational trips for Ivy and her school friends.

They would take the Getty jet to study art in Paris, learn about animal welfare on safari in Africa, exposing Ivy to the world and learning she loved.

Ivy had a very cosmopolitan upbringing”,says Jo Schuman, her grandmother’sAnnbest friend.

In 2021 26-year old Ivy Getty married the photographer Tobias Engel in the splendor of “Getty Villa” in San Francisco.

The highlight was her glass-mirrored wedding dress by John Galliano of Maison Margiela Atelier.

“I’ve been obsessed with John Galliano forever, and it was a dream come true to meet him.

He listened to my dreams.

We first met at his studio in Paris to discuss my gown, and he listened to my dreams and made a few quiet comments.

He is so cool and so humble with ideas and inspirations”– says Ivy.

On the other side Galliano shared in Vogue that he doesn’t usually design the dresses for the bridesmaids:

“But I was so enchanted by Ivy and the stories of these women that I made an exception”.

Unfortunately her father John couldn’t be with her because he died in 2020.

Ivy Getty will be always addicted to “the rock and roll” aspects of his personality – tailored Savile Row jackets with cowboy boots and velvet scarves.

Nowadays couple is renovating a penthouse on Lower Manhattan which was touched by Ann’s perfect taste.

The focus is on eco-philosophy and enjoy staying in this lovely place. Ivy describes concept as “casual and versatile, respectful of the planet, personal.”
