Very, very Lotta Volkova

Lotta Volkova.

An absolutely Russian underground lady who injected the fashion with the new sexy energy.

Lotta Volkova – a lady of the moment which currency is her taste and her taste is a cocktail of an aesthetic, inspired by fetishism, punk, West, East and soviet street culture.

Her idea of style is not what we dress, but how we think.

Lotta Volkova is not afraid to say that “conventionally beautiful things are boring”.

Lotta’s last project is a spicy collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier, the fashion’s enfant terrible.

“It was an incredible honor to be able to discover the archives, obsess and fetishise –

reimagine the iconic Jean Paul Gaultier collections in the context of 2022 reintroducing them into a contemporary wardrobe.

My purpose was to capture the quintessence of Jean Paul Gaultier and make it available to the modern fashion audience” .

It’s a fetish reminiscence of his Fall/Winter 1984 collection with the iconic bra, shimmery long sleeves and tattoo shirt with stocking seams.

Lotta Volkova’s fashion path was so atypical.

Born in Vladivostok, Lotta  was hungry for pop culture.

She was lucky because her father was captain of the cargo and brought her a lot of pieces from the Western world.

Volkova’s mother injected in her idea about underground.

“ She liked the whole post-punk, early 80s, alt-rock era, so I grew up sucking in all those references.

Ihad Prada shoes and Dior by Galliano jumpers, she was wearing Galliano herself.

She is tiny and has really big boobs and is blonde, but then she pretty much looks like me.”

It’s funny but Lotta’s got her name thanks to the song “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin.

After her study in “Central St Martins” in London, Volkova had started her own brand “Lotta Skeletrics” with post-punk aesthetic which could be worn with Prada shoes and underground makeup.

Her brand could be seen at the Dover Street Market where she met Rei Kawakubo.

Her first photo shoot was by a very popular fashion photographer Ellen Von Unwerth.

Lately Lotta Volkova was behind the success of “Vetements”, the cult eastern European designers currently shaping fashion.

Meeting with Gosha Rubchinskiy, the Comme des Garçons-backed Russian designer crystalized her fashion philosophy.

“We became friends instantly. We were both born in 1984 and I think that makes a big difference.

We have the same references and are interested in the same subcultures.”

Lotta thinks that “Vetements” is very much about attitude and translation the moods into shapes and silhouettes.

For example, “a jacket that looks as if you just got off your motorcycle.”

Nowadays Lotta Volkova could be seen with a megastar Kanye West and we are guessing that they are working together.

Is she a stylist to West?

Maybe.

But the one of the interesting thing to think about are her words:

“There are no subcultures to be discovered anymore, at least not in the Western world.

It’s more about the remix of information.”

Is it the end of the model of fashion we already know?

What will happen with the fashion in the future?

Maybe it will be very, very Lotta!
